Choosing the Right ID Card Printer or Credential

ID card printing and access control systems can vary considerably depending on the application. Before selecting a printer or credential, consider the type of cards being issued, printing volume, single-sided or dual-sided requirements, security features, encoding needs and compatibility with existing systems.

For access control credentials, always verify the required technology and system compatibility before ordering. Similar-looking cards and key fobs may operate at different frequencies or use different credential technologies.

ID Card Printer & Credential FAQs

What type of ID card printer do I need?

The best ID card printer depends on your card volume, whether you need single-sided or dual-sided printing, the type of card being printed and whether features such as magnetic stripe or contactless encoding are required.

What is the difference between single-sided and dual-sided ID card printers?

Single-sided printers print one side of the card during the printing process. Dual-sided printers can automatically print both the front and back, making them useful for cards that include instructions, barcodes, contact information or additional identification on the reverse.

Can an ID card printer print access control cards?

Many access control cards can be personalized with compatible ID card printers, but card construction and printer compatibility must be verified first. Some proximity and smart cards require specific card thicknesses, materials or printing methods.

What is a proximity credential?

A proximity credential is a contactless card, key fob or other device used with a compatible access control reader. Different credential technologies are available, including traditional 125kHz proximity and newer 13.56 MHz contactless smart card technologies.
